I feel like I'm currently about to embark on another journey of minimalism, of refining and getting rid of in most areas of my life.
This video is about that journey.
I've been a minimalist for over ten years, and I've only really needed to do a great declutter like this 2 or 3 times.
Most of the time I'm in a constant state of going through a closet here, a drawer there to get rid of things that are no longer bringing me value.
Honestly, this stuff has just been weighing me down very heavily and I'm excited to get back to simple.
So first I wanted to start in my office because this is the spot that is the closest to clean.
Kind of the snowball effect.
Do the smallest thing first.
I started with the drawers next to my desk.
These drawers are supposed to house things that are essentials for getting things done at my desk.
Things like portable hard drives, charging cables, and the like.
I also have a drawer for paper checks and that type of thing.
Because this is a space that I spend most of my day in, this area actually wasn't too bad, but I still managed to find a pretty good
chunk of things that I was ready to pass on.
Then I jumped in my closet to go through my clothes.
I've had people asking me about doing a minimalist wardrobe video and that is in the works.
To be honest, I'm just finishing up the final touches on the latest iteration of this wardrobe.
And so when that is ready, I will make that video.
I'm also pretty consistent about going to my wardrobe.
Usually every six months or so, I will clear things out and replace the things that are completely worn out.
I will also say I've always been a very budget conscious person, and so wardrobes are very difficult for me because I just don't like spending money on clothes.
Once I finished up, I had a stack of items to donate.
Abby is super good about managing things like the living room, the entryway, and our bedroom.
And so those are not my domains to go through.
The kitchen is also as minimal as she will allow it to be.
And so I moved on past those areas and went straight to the worst area of all the basement.
I have a love hate relationship with the basement.
On one hand, it's nice to have the extra space.
On the other hand, that's a lot of extra space out of sight, out of mind to dump things.
And honestly, that's kind of what's happened over the last year.
So to be honest, this is really embarrassing.
This is the worst my basement has ever been by a pretty long shot, and it's caused me so much anxiety over the last couple of months,
but I had to put it off until I finished remodeling the bathroom, which I finished literally last night because I wanted to jump in and do this as fast as I possibly could.
And so I am so excited to make this back into a place that I can actually use, place that isn't just full of all the dumping ground and the tools and everything
you from from life for the last few months. So.
所以。
Oh, that's so bad.
First comes the laundry area.
Here I'm clearing out all the drywall and painting supplies from the bathroom remodel.
We borrowed some of the supplies from my parents, some from Abby's parents and some from another friend.
I also gained a few tools in the process.
I'll talk about tools here in a minute.
The goal here is to get down to just the stuff that belongs to us, and just having the most basic essentials for home maintenance.
We've done quite a bit of painting in this home over the last five years that I've lived here, so I just wanted to strip this down
to what we currently have in the walls, ceilings, and baseboards.
The rest of the remnants need to go out to the garage to dry.
I obviously also wanted to get rid of all the old items from the bathroom remodel that ended up in the basement.
This feels kind of crazy.
People have their own rules for deciding whether to keep something or get rid of it.
And today I wanted to share a few of my personal rules that I use when making this decision.
Number one, if an item is a seasonal item and I haven't used it in six months, it's probably time to pass it on.
Number two, if it is a seasonal item and I haven't used it in a year and I don't plan to use it in the next year, I'll go ahead and get rid of it.
Number three set a price threshold for selling versus donating.
So that threshold for me right now is $50 and it's worth more.
I tried to sell it on eBay or Marketplace.
If it's worth less, I go ahead and donate it.
I believe that we are responsible for the things that we own, and so when it comes time to get rid of that item, I try to do so in the most ethical way possible.
Basically, throwing it in the trash is the last option after I've gone through selling or donating.
Even with these rules, there are always a few things I'm unsure of, and that's where I keep a box in the basement.
I'll put a date on that box.
and donate it. Tools are an interesting one.
I grew up defaulting to fixing everything myself instead of hiring someone, and that gene has really stuck with me.
I do all my car maintenance and I've done a few bigger repairs myself.
I remodel the bathroom from scratch this year as well, so having enough tools to do things like that is important to me.
My philosophy with tools includes a couple things.
Number one, buy the cheap version of the tool first.
If you break it, you can justify buying the expensive version.
I started my tool collection at age five, and to date I have only broken three tools using this philosophy.
This hammer and saw are from my fifth birthday.
2. If I'm acquiring a tool, it must be something that I don't have another similar solution to and it might solve a problem that I found myself having on multiple occasions.
I keep a note on my phone of the tools that would have made each job easier, and once I've listed that thing multiple times, I know it's probably worth considering.
I've also found that if people want to get me gifts for my birthday or Christmas, a specific tool I found myself stuck without is a very helpful thing to ask for.
I'm at a weird crossroads with tools right now, because I've reached the limit of what my one toolbox can fit, and I need to decide
if I need to expand my storage in this particular area, or if I just completely limit my intake of tools.
I still haven't made that decision yet.
I've watched some of those amazing minimalist toolkit videos where everything fits in one small tool bag, but my needs have extended well beyond the limits of those perfect little toolkits.
If ever choose to begin outsourcing my vehicle maintenance or home renovations, I will definitely consider downsizing my toolkit.
But for this stage of my life, this is about the right size of kit for my needs.
Up next is my filmmaking equipment.
If you're new around here, I have run a commercial video production company for the past six years.
Wait, it's 2025, seven years.
So all this equipment belongs to my company.
I've chosen to own equipment rather than rent on a per job basis for a number of reasons.
Number one, I live 100 miles from the nearest rental house.
Number two, owning equipment has allowed me to take home a larger portion of the profits from each project while charging clients for the equipment as a rental as well.
So, with a few exceptions, most of this equipment has paid for itself in rentals.
Earlier in my career, it allowed me to pursue passion projects and work on lower budget projects to build my portfolio.
I wouldn't have been able to do this without owning this equipment.
I have a few important philosophies around owning gear, and I made a few mistakes over the years, but for the most part, I've been very consistent with this.
Number one, my intention is to only own equipment I use on 50% of productions.
This one can be pretty tricky to stay consistent with, because the right tool varies so much depending on the job.
Number two only buy equipment I can afford double the price of in cash.
Film equipment is incredibly expensive and brands charge a premium just because something is made for filmmaking.
See this clamp? at the hardware store, this is in $1.50.
If they advertise the same clamp as a filmmaking clamp. $5.
Another rule I've built for myself.
This is actually exactly the opposite of my rule with tools for personal use.
For film equipment, I only purchase industry standard equipment, not the knockoff brand.
Every knockoff brand I purchased has proven to be a mistake.
It has either broken or has not directly fulfilled the need at the same level as the industry standard tool would have.
I went through four tripods, and as many years before I sucked it up and purchased the industry standard version.
I'm relying on this stuff for my living and it can't fail.
Unlike tools, I also make sure I have some sort of backup of each essential item just in case something breaks on production.
I'm so excited to use these boxes up and get rid of the rest.
I've been saving boxes for selling equipment over time, and today is finally the day.
Here I'm setting aside all the equipment that I'm planning to sell this year.
This is actually a lot.
This is the most I've sold in one year.
So at this point, things are not perfect down here by any stretch of the imagination.
I was hoping to have this all done for the video, but I'm still in the process.
I'll just keep chipping away at this as I have time.
We have this giant pile of stuff to donate over there.
I'm selling a pretty large amount of equipment over here, and I've thrown away three bags of trash from everything.
Thanks so much for coming along on this journey of decluttering with me.
I hope this was helpful or at least relatable.
If you have any tips or rules you implement for yourself with minimalism or decluttering, drop those down in the comments.
I'd love to read them.
Thanks so much for being here and we'll see you next week.
