Amazon has begun test flights of its delivery drones in the UK, marking an important step toward launching an airborne delivery service later this year. The tech giant announced that 'a limited number of flights' had been launched from its base in Darlington, though it clarified that customer deliveries have not yet begun.
Once operational, the service will allow eligible customers in Darlington to receive packages weighing under five pounds within two hours. Amazon will use its most advanced drone, the MK30, which features sophisticated obstacle-avoidance technology designed to ensure 'the safety of people, pets and property.'
The drones are equipped with cameras that can detect obstacles like clotheslines or trampolines—items that might not appear on satellite maps. These same cameras continuously monitor surrounding airspace during flight, determining whether evasive action is needed to avoid other aircraft entering the drone's path.
The perception technology relies on sophisticated machine learning models trained to recognize various objects including people, animals, physical barriers, and other airborne vehicles. David Carbon, Amazon's vice president of Prime Air, emphasized that the devices are designed to operate 'quietly and efficiently' with safety as a 'top priority.'
